The Black Academic Excellence Center (BAEC) program is committed to supporting the advancement and excellence of Black students and Black student groups within the Cal Poly community. By fostering an inclusive environment, providing academic support, and promoting a positive self-image, our goal is to empower Black students to take full advantage of all the opportunities presented while actively engaging with Black history and culture. Having a holistic college experience is important to us so we encourage students to contact us with any questions or concerns. As part of the Student Diversity and Belonging unit, BAEC contributes to the University's commitment of supporting diversity for a more inclusive and welcoming campus for all students, staff, and faculty. Our mission is to increase the retention and graduation rates of Black students on campus by providing Black students will the skills and opportunities to be able to engage at Cal Poly academically and socially.
Gifts to the Black Academic Excellence Center go a long way towards ensuring that Cal Poly celebrates Black culture, thoughts, history, and ideas while increasing the retention and graduation rates of Black Cal Poly students. Your gift would not only empower the BAEC to continue to offer a wide range of supportive services to help students navigate college, including workshops on resume and cover letter writing, handling stress, time management and more. In addition, the center provides personal and academic advising and a computer lab, as well as hosting monthly “couch conversations” to build stronger relationships between students and faculty members, among other efforts. The BAEC also serves as a social and cultural hub for many of our students, providing a community space while also hosting comprehensive resources on the civil rights movement, African culture, as well as fiction and non-fiction novels by African-American authors.
