Chemistry & Biochemistry Department
Support Marine Chemistry Field Studies!
The Biochemistry and Chemistry Department is raising $2,000 for Cal Poly’s study abroad course in French Polynesia! In this program students gain a deeper understanding of ocean chemistry, Polynesian people and culture, and ultimately, a deeper understanding of themselves. In the marine environments surrounding the islands of Mo’orea and Tetiaroa of French Polynesia, students will design and carry out research projects under the guidance and support of their instructors. Because these two islands are essentially in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, far from large centers of human population, they offer unparalleled opportunities to study ocean water chemistry. Almost every day students will spend time in boats, kayaking, snorkeling, and in the island laboratories working on projects. Students will use analytical instrumentation -- some of which we will build prior to departure -- to study the chemical properties of the water and the coral reef environments that have deep ecological and cultural value.
This is an opportunity for students to experience one of the most impressive environments on our planet, and to execute scientific research related to understanding and protecting that environment. This opportunity offers valuable academic and cultural experiences, and your donation will help make international education more accessible.
