Send Concrete Canoe to Regionals and Nationals!
Description
Every year, the Cal Poly Concrete Canoe Team designs, builds and races a full-scale canoe made entirely of concrete. Our student-led team spends months developing concrete mixes, designing and constructing molds and preparing our canoe to compete against universities from across the country.
Our first major competition is the ASCE Regional Concrete Canoe Competition, held this year in Los Angeles, where we compete against other universities from the Southwest. At Regionals, our team is evaluated on four major components: a themed display showcasing our canoe and its design, a technical presentation, a written technical proposal and a series of canoe races. These events challenge us not only to build a successful canoe but also to demonstrate our engineering knowledge, communication skills and teamwork.
Our ultimate goal is to qualify for the ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition, held this year in Kansas. Nationals follows a similar format to Regionals, bringing together the top qualifying teams from across the United States and international competitors. Last season, Cal Poly placed 7th overall at Nationals, and this year we hope to make another run at the podium.
Getting to these competitions requires significant resources. In addition to the specialized materials needed to construct our canoe, we must transport our team, equipment, and canoe to Los Angeles and potentially all the way to Kansas. Donations help us cover these construction and travel expenses, allowing our students to continue representing Cal Poly and putting our Learn by Doing education into practice.
Thank you for your support of the Cal Poly Concrete Canoe Team!
