MEXA de Cal Poly is a student-run organization that aims to promote higher education amongst Xicanx/a/o identifying students and is dedicated to providing opportunities to give back to underrepresented students across the Central Coast. We are dedicated to retaining our cultural identity, preserving and studying our history, maintaining ties with the Xicano community, and becoming politically active. We also provide a safe space for Latinx-identifying students to make connections and feel supported.
Every year, MEXA hosts its annual Xicanx Youth Conference (XYC) in Chumash Auditorium at Cal Poly in order to promote higher education to underrepresented high school students from around the Central Coast. Many of these underrepresented students are not exposed to resources that offer them guidance during the college application process. Through the workshops and activities offered at XYC, we hope to encourage these students to pursue a higher education.
MEXA hosts over 300 high school students at the Xicanx Youth Conference every year. This year, we hope to host even more students from various cities along the Central Coast. In order to accomplish this goal, we need your help. Based on the amount of schools interested in attending XYC, our organization's budget alone will not be enough to cover the expenses associated with the conference. During our 30-day Spur Change campaign, we hope to raise $1,100, which will be spent on student meals, materials needed for breakout sessions, a keynote speaker, and XYC t-shirts for students who attend the conference. Since students often attend XYC independent from their school, your contribution will also help us provide transportation to schools that need our support in order to travel to Cal Poly.
With your help, MEXA will be able to provide underrepresented high school students with a fully-funded and enriching experience consisting of educational, political, and cultural workshops by funding student meals and transportation. Your contribution will get us that much closer to reaching our $1,100 goal, which will allow us the opportunity to inspire and inform young students about the opportunities higher education presents.
